An unforgettable summer at the Book Club!
The pandemic that began in March equals little to no access to education for children in rural areas of Romania. Primary school children need to catch up on learning delays, and the most burning issue is knowing the alphabet. We realized this while organizing a digital reading club with the little ones this spring, while we were staying at home. Summer should be an opportunity to consolidate knowledge for kids, while preparing their return to school in September.
Therefore, this summer will be a fairytale, literally and figuratively, for 50 children from the villages of Laslea, Mălâncrav, Florești, Nou Săsesc and Roandola, from Sibiu County, Transylvania.
We prepared a Book Club for them!
Children will read stories, weekly, in Cinzia’s company, our mentor trained in pedagogy. The reading plan will make it easy for children to enter the world of stories and fables, essentially building a pleasant memory about the summer of 2020, after such a long time away from school. The club will help kids improve their reading skills, vocabulary, ability to identify the main ideas of a text, and it will give them the possibility to express their opinion, and develop their creativity.
And, when we talk about summer storytelling and reading in nature, we are not joking at all! We take advantage of the beauty of the Transylvanian highlands to read outside, in the school yard and on our breathtaking hills. The literacy process is much easier if students associate reading with memories of the surrounding nature, with stories and with various games played with their friends. We aim to train little book enthusiasts who will learn to take advantage of the e-books our association makes available for everybody who is interested in literature.
We respect the prevention rules against the spread of viruses, therefore the groups are small, of maximum 5 participants at a time, and everyone will be using masks and disinfectants. We hope it will be a long autumn, because our club is planned to last long after the summer vacation, more precisely until November. At the end of our project, we are preparing a surprise for parents and teachers, who will be able to enjoy, alongside us, the results of a beautiful summer full of wonderful stories and great books.
The ,,Book Club” project is possible through a Start ONG grant funded by Kaufland Romania and implemented by Act for Tomorrow Association.
